Tom Wolfe's book of collected articles, The
Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby came out
in '65, Hunter Thompson published his Hells Angels
book in '66, so  Pynchon's article is contemporaneous
with them.  I don't know that P works as hard as they
to make himself the story (instead of the story's
ostensible object), but that's an issue worth looking
into.
