accumulation of details that indicate his presence. 
Point out what he describes in his article that any
Los Angeles resident couldn't describe second-hand.

The Watts Tower, railroad tracks, broken Tokay
bottles, boys with Afros -- not much more than that.

Oh wait, this:  

"the different species of cop: the Black and White
(named for the color scheme of their automobiles) ..."
