<<In the arts and book review section of the
Independent today (www.independent.co.uk), there is an
interview with John Irving by one Robert Dawson Scott
- amusingly, Scott writes of Irving: 'he will talk
happily about his literary tastes; he likes Dickens,
Rushdie, Garcia Marquez, the Canadian Robertson
Davies; he doesn't like Thomas Pynchon or anyone he
sees as deliberately, or at best carelessly obscure.'
Even better than that pearl, he quotes Irving as
saying that if he had read many modern or postmodern
writers, he would had never wanted to be a novelist.
The article, cover story and all, is accompanied by a
photo of Irving contriving to look both smug and macho
in an Adidas top ('at ease in a blue singlet', as
Scott pricelessly offers).>>

Every time this jackass has a photo op he dresses up
in his high school wrestling garb.

He also said, in another interview recently re James
Joyce:

"There was — I don't know, what would you call it? a
poll? — about who the greatest twentieth century
writer was, and the critics at Time magazine chose
Joyce. Spare me. Okay, Portrait of the Artist as a
Young Man — nice book. The rest of it? Self indulgent,
intellectual crap."

I suppose he'd have voted for Dreiser.

He also once, in the west village, hip-checked my
ex-wife and stole a cab she had flagged.
