It was even before the 70s, when the sexual revolution REALLY took
hold. (among grown-ups even)

Marcuse I gather was quite an old fart as far as traditional connubial
behavior was concerned. It had seemed OK in theory but strong doubts as
to earlier hopes that full release of sexual energy might lead to a
less destructive society arose from the observation of how sex could be
commodified, etc., etc.

Interestingly. while a lot of the action at College of the Surf was in
progress, Marcuse was doing his academic thing right down the road
LaJolla way at UC San Diego. Apparently Marcuse was quite appalled by
the student revolutionaries' turning their wrath against the authority
of the professors. He considered the academy a sort of last hope. We all
live and learn.
