I'm surprised the translator needed Pynchon's authorizations, because 
the french one didn't need his authorization when he renamed GR to 
"Gravity" and CoL49 "San Francisco Cry" (!!!!!). Of course these 
translations were published in the 70's while the german one seemed to 
have been in the 80's -the decade in which the french publishers 
reedited the books with a new title: the litteral translations of the 
original titles. So maybe he "regained" some prerogatives on the 
translations of his works at the end of the 70's, early 80's?
