Very much like shuffling one's hand to see what there
is, indeed. Is there some possibilty that WASN'T
tried there? Perhaps significantly? All those
Pynchonian moments where, simply because of the effort
that MIGHT have been expended on them, dangle
Significance just out of brain's reach. We are all
Stencil, Oedipa, Slothrop, et al. ...
But I can more easily read that as an attempt to cling
to consciousness, sanity, whatever, than as a perhaps
more pointed act of resistance (though maybe Robt.
wasn't really much suggesting more than that, or that
they are the same thing, or ...). Okay, gotta run ...
