I suppose one could read the sentence that way, but I
read it to say that Pynchon's influence was
Fitzgerald, Farina's Hemingway.

Each (e.g. Pynchon) aware that the other (e.g. Farina)
had been through a phase of enthusiasm for his--the
other's; (i.e. Farina's) respective author.  Pynchon
for Fitzgerald, Farina for Hemingway.
