Again from Inger H. Dalsgaard, "Gravity's Rainbow: A
Historical Novel of a New Sort," Pynchon Notes 50-51
(Spring-Fall 2002), pp. 34-50 ...
[...] Critical readers
suggest that Pynchon neglects his duty to depict the
Holocaust and the horror of modern combat as
undeniable truths of the Second World War, [...]
This criticism of GR continues to mystify me. The
novel is full of allusions and direct references to
the Holocaust, SS, Nazis, many of which have been
identified and discussed in this forum; one of the
most powerful passages of the novel is Pokler among
the dead and dying of the Dora camp, pp. 432-433,
where the suffering of these Holocaust victims is tied
directly to production of the rocket. More generally,
the pain and suffering of the War's victims are to be
found throughout the novel as well.
Thanks for posting this, Dave. I haven't received my
copy of PN yet and am looking forward to it.
