Nation building is modeled on American style managerial capitalism or System-building. Pynchon, no economist, but fairly good with business math, understood very early in his studies that System-building began in the USA--the revolution in transportation and communication systems or the railroads. What Alfred D. Chandler call "The Visible Hand" has got a tight grip on Iraq. Not a very economic (quite inefficient) way to go, but Bush & Co. are old robber barrons and cia spooks, they can't help it. 
 
I hope old tom will write a novel about it some day. A sort of GR set in 1890 & 1990 USA.  Can't wait to see jay gould and billy gates get it on. can you?

Not really sure about this. Perhaps this IS the precise junction in history at which to begin the switch from the Capitalistic politico-economic system to the more equitable Unicornistic p-e system.
