Enzian's Rocket Mandala -- Sixty Years Later
On the sixtieth anniversary of Slothrops legendary three week sojourn in
the transformative ruins of Berlin, Marca and I take pleasure in sending you
this jpeg and these words from our "place" in Berlin (near the
Kurfürstendamm between Der Platz and Tiergarten) where it is hot but not
quite as hot as the heatwave of July 1945, and no shortage of beer, ice
cream or green Hershey bars!
For those of you whove never been to Berlin, the mandala really does look
like this in the afternoon on clear days. Enjoy! --- Marca & Douglas
Excerpt from: Relocation / Dislocation
Similar signs appear: warplanes overhead, an increasing amount of gunfire
out in the streets, dogs barking, Vaslav's metal face smiling on more than
one cabaret poster, Enzian's rocket mandala blinking at dusk over
Alexanderplatz . . . The sacred Herero Insignia continues to shine over
Alexanderplatz, the four fins of the rocket transformed across the cupola of
the television tower, reflecting today Das Kreuz des Ostens ("The Eastern
Cross"/"The Cross of the East") -- a mystical sight indeed!
Hovering presently over Alexanderplatz the mandala has returned to its
German base. Visible for all, yet seldom perceived, the cross is best viewed
in the afternoon from the top of the Siegessäule looking eastward at the
transmission tower. This is no longer a dislocation, but a clear sign from
the other world -- a spiritual Medium in the center of Berlin. Dimmed by
decades, Rocketman's original graffiti is more difficult to spot, reserved
for the future elect. A faded Tyrone tag or two can be seen on certain
benches in the Tiergarten, in the subway sidings at Moritzplatz and
underneath Unter den Linden in the unfinished tunnels of U5 -- the
chancellor line!
It may take years before this subway connecting Alexanderplatz with the
Kanzleramt is completed, and who can say when the vacant lot on the
northeastern corner of Unter den Linden/Friedrichstraße, Berlin's most
expensive location, will be rebuilt and the legendary Chicago Bar open for
[clandestine] business? Hearsay has it though that an underground of its
own is right on schedule. Third-generation Rocketman offshoots -- now in
their teens, reunited with their zonal siblings, and conscious of their
personal rocket -- are already gathering in Berlin. . . .
