Right -- I'm not clear on the memory either, but on the unmapped highway that
leads to the base where Vond's people are holding Frenesi, DL and company pass
those weird mile markers with pictures of (rebellious?) Americans.  Fitting in
with the book's many images of new scales, new gradations.

In the broad sense, GR's Zone is unmapped, though about to be very rigidly
mapped -- a blank space, like the dreamt-of Argentina, where, for a charismatic
moment, "all the fences [are] down..."
