So if (1,1 and 1,2) in quadripartite structure prefigures the narrative
structure, acting as the short lever arm on the left side of the
fulcrum of 1,3 to lift the rest of the plot
(and I'm not saying it does)
then that pattern obviously needs to be played with
Looking at Bloat Slinking along in, 1,3, in almost a circle, but the
ends aren't connected, the plot's a Slinky, arching its way downstairs

Slothrop's special gift that draws the attention of Them is this: he is
attracting the girls.
Naturally They take an interest: Pointsman is so desperate that when he
has a bit of a slap and tickle at the Christmas party, he writes down
all the medication of the day, hoping he can replicate the fun. All
these guys could use a little help in the lovin' dept. Sure, the map
maps to the bomb strikes, sure, infant Tyrone was conditioned to erect
in the presence of the mystery stimulus (a pleasant enough experiment)
- but what gets these chaps interested is the babe magnet aspect...it's
what keeps me readin' (well, that and the prose, and the songs)
Hypothesis: Pirate's special talent, of compassion and communication,
is able to save Europe from its Balkan apocalypse...
but not from WWII
The Firm is always scouting for new talent (looking ahead as They do),
and Slothrop may be just the ticket to avert the new apocalypse
>From a situationist story-telling point of view, isn't it great to put
a talent for careless love inside a War? The drop of catalyst that can
change the zeitgeist...
