Nobel favourite

The other thing going for him is that he has been on the short list a 
couple of times already, and was actually favourite to win in 2003 if I 
recall correctly. Usual case scenario is that the writer is 
short-listed a couple of times and then gets the nod, though Jelinek 
came out of left field I think. The Nobel committee does seem to take 
pains to share the literature prize around, and they do actually read 
the works, often getting them translated especially (into Swedish even, 
if needs be). While it's difficult to compare across cultures and 
mediums, it's a little bit parochial to say that such-and-such should 
get it over the Vietnamese woman poet, say, when you haven't even read 
the Vwp's work. Anyway, the likelihood that it will go to an 
English-speaking writer two years running is pretty slim. The timing 
does seem right for a progressive-minded Arabic writer who is heavily 
versed in the Koran.
