	I don't know London, but from taking trains out of other cities, 
perhaps the sense that the road should be broadening out comes from the
transition from tracks amid buildings and in concrete trenches/tunnels
to the more open suburbs and rural areas.  The Evacuation is broken
and the destination is more of the same stuff that the folk are fleeing.
The Evacuation is a fake, whether conscious or not, and the people are 
being herded back into the the belly of the beast.
