Very true. My point was, we choose the nightmares of literature, but  
not those of everyday life.

Similarly, we can quite handily chose to reject the old "honest  
consciousness" in the course of our adventures on the  p-list, which  
we retain the power to shut off at any time, but still yearn for a  
fairly ordered life  within the circle of,  say,  our wives,  
husbands, children, significant others.  Beings we can't so readily  
walk away from even for a short rest.

It's an important distinction to keep in mind, IMHO.
