ATD: the title

I've been wondering today if Pynchon might have had
Against the Day in mind as a title for a long time,
and thus be invested enough in it to keep it even
after that alternative history novel by the same name
was published.  The reasoning here is that he wouldn't
have chosen this title *after* a novel of the same
name was published, but he might stick with one he'd
had in mind for a while, especially if the novel with
the same name isn't exactly a household word (which is
not to say that it isn't a wonderful novel). I'm
assuming that his editor (or somebody at his
publishing house, or his agent) would be able to find
out about the other Against the Day novel easily, if
he didn't already happen to know about it.
