"Terry Gilliam and Ishiro Honda ... John Ford (no no,
not just 'The Searchers' -- but 'Doctor Bull,' 'The
Sun Shines Bright,' 'Wagon Master,' 'The Battle of
Midway,' 'The Wings of Eagles'), Jacques Rivette,
Philippe Garrel, Pedro Costa, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Tsai
Ming-liang, Jean Eustache, Nicholas Ray, Chris Marker,
Joâo César Monteiro, Samira Makhmalbaf,
Maurice Pialat, Naomi Kawase, Abel Ferrara, Béla Tarr,
Louis Feuillade, Seijun Suzuki, Agnès Varda ..."

I had to look a couple/three up myself ...

Gilliam (Brazil), Honda (Godzilla), Ray Rebel without
a Cause) and Ford (see above) I'm sure you're
familiar, but of those I have some working knowledge
of, see, e.g.: Cleo from 5 to 7 and The Gleaners
(Varda); La Jetee (basis for Gliiam's 12 Monkeys, all
still shots ave one), Grin without a Cat and Sans
Soleile (Marker); Paris nous appartient (Rivette);
Satantango (there was a report of a DeLillo sighting
at a showing of this here a while back) and The
Werckmeister Harmonies (damn, I've got to see that
again, made me believe GR could be filmed,
even--Tarr); The Puppetmatser and Flowers of Shanghai
(Hou--nice article in current Film Comment, by the
way); Les Vampires (Feuillade--see also Olivier
Assayas' Irma Vep); Goodbye, Dragon Inn (Tsai); Bad
Lieutenant (Ferrara, then check his c.v. and see what
you prefer, SF, horror, or just plain violence);
Tokyo Drifter, Branded to Kill and, more recently,
Pistol Opera (Suzuki--his Princess Raccoon should be
making the rounds soon; see also, say, Kanto Wanderer,
cf. Kill Bill Vol. 1; anything by Suzuki ...) ...

But do see, say, Danger: Diabolik!, Black Lizard,
Modesty Blaise and Black Tight Killers as well ...
