Another hazarded (& hazardous, in this list!) guess: it's "folksy"; as  such, 
it's an attempt to appeal to the LCD (Least Common Denominator, from old  
math classes), i.e., the popular masses, whom the publishers want to attract.  
They know they've got a lock on the die-hards (e.g., us, & other literati or  
whatever); they want more bucks from the buckaroos, the unwashed masses out  
there...
