>Just what would constitute a spoiler?

I think that depends on the sensitivity of an individual reader. For some it
would be the disclosure of (one of) the main plotlines (e.g. an American
lieutenant's erections seem to be related to the V-2 rocket), for others
some background info (e.g. time and place, historical personages etc.). What
I'm sure of it won't be the gardener-is-the-murderer kind of spoiler anyway.
Although you will agree with me that Ian Banks' 'Wasp Factory' can be
spoiled by one sentence which poor me read in one goddamn book review I
still hate for doing this to me. I don't know what will be the politics of
pre-reviews in case of Pynchon, but with some authors like Danielewski and
Powers, those have become available pretty in advance. And, certainly, there
are people who've read the novel besides Pynchon and his editor. A
favourable early review would come in handy for the publisher wishing to
sell the novel to a wider audience.
