affair with and faith ins fakes.   It's really quite funny.

Sure you can. Closest I've been to Humboldt County is New York, unless
Washington DC is closer?  I'm definitely not over-burdened with
knowledge about the West Coast (though I've seen 'Play it Again Sam' a
fair few times), but I had no problem 'getting' Boyle's books or
Vineland. I'm sure if you are familiar with the terrain and culture of
California, then you get an extra boost out of Vineland but really, how
much can that really add up to in terms of the scope of the book? It's
surely nowhere near big enough a factor to prevent someone fully
enjoying it, is it? Nah!
