I've always thought that DeLillo is more notable as a stylist.  I think he 
works the surface hard, and so his characters are, in a sense, secondary to a 
sensibility that he displays through his style.  In that way he's more like 
Dashiell Hammet than like Pynchon.  

Such writing often has a short shelf life and DeLillo has come already, for 
many I think, to seem mannered.

But, at least for me, it worked in the eighties and early nineties, seemed 
spot on.

I still particularly like Great Jones Street.
