Me too, "White Noise" is such a wonderfully mannered book (akin, in that sense, to Vineland) and "Underworld" gives off a wonderful sense of the size of this country and of the vast parade of time. I'd say, given the general coldness of so much of the dialog in DeLillo, his voice is more Hammett than Chandler. Can't say as I have a problem with that.
