whatever weird substition thing that Pynchon seems to
have going on here, where somehow dynamite "displaces"
 (I hesitate to say "equals" - not sure what
terminology to use, in fact) LSD, is intriguing. >>

Obvious 'mind blowing' type connections of course. What sprung to my
mind was the fact that the chemical process leading to explosives
(broadly: negative) also provides a mind-expanding drug experience
(broadly: positive) might, at a stretch, be a reference to, or touch on,
the story of how LSD became a part of the 1960s etc. and the arguments
over whether the CIA tried to harness LSD for their own uses, but
failed, then the hippies (led by Owsley, Leary etc) claimed it as their
own and fuelled their revolution with it, or whether the opposite was
true, ie. the hippies were fooled by Them into thinking they were using
LSD as an agent of subversion but were in fact being subverted
themselves. Or some mix of both?
