Fine post, Monte, thanks.

I like the idea of "personification" for Pynchon's
characters. Watch how much mileage he gets out of Skip
the ball lightning character, a sketchy concept at
best.

Cartoonists know and practice deep magic when it comes
to making characters come alive from a few sketched
lines and some dialogue, and I think Pynchon has
learned a lot from them as a writer.
