Even if we accept that the characters are concepts, I've been disappointed that Pynchon didn't provide us with a protagonist (Slothrop, Oedipa) or at least dual protagonist (Mason-Dixon, Profane-Stencil). The protagonist family, the Traverses, is overpopulated, IMO.
