Rupert Murdoch's worthless rag gives ATD to Appleyard to review, a man who's 
read no Pynchon at all, and seems not to have even finished ATD. For fuck 
sake.

And how about this:

"...though he is known to live in Manhattan, he remains invisible to, and 
unheard by, his readers."

What about the Simpsons appeareances? Was that not his voice?

Yet another crushing example of the dangers of reading anything in the 
mainstream media when you already know (or, god forbid, care) something 
about the subject at hand.
