Thanks, Heikki! It appears you're right. I just tried googling "pynchon 
against the day 250,000" and got this hit:

They attribute this information to the publisher, so I guess the figure is 
correct. Quite a number for an author like Pynchon (the first hardcover 
printing of GR was 4000 copies). I'm somehow reminded of Geoffrey Wolf's 
comment about Gravity's Rainbow: "Forests have gone to the blade to make 
paper for this novel. Don't mourn the trees; read the book."
