The gas communication network read to me like a redux of the Grid we
saw in Byron the Bulb's adventure, with perhaps an echo of the
Trystero. How far these echoes add up, I'm not sure yet. How do you
tell apart a nod to TCL49 or an instance of Pynchon revisiting the
same themes and deciding to do it better this time?

Oh, maybe a bit of "ritual reluctance", just to give a hint of people
"so obviously in on something". . . . ;-)
