Hardly ridicule unredeemed, re the mystical and the
spiritual in Pynchon, here in Against the Day or
elsewhere, imo.  It's the people role-playing that he
uses for fun, whatever the rap - religious TWIT,
scientific Pavlovian Pointsmaniac (and, tangent, isn't
it interesting that we've got folks blowing up the
trains in ATD where Pointsman was switching them in
GR) & etc. The texts point to an omega point, insist
on the enigmatic and mysterious, secular or spritual
but beyond reduction, even if the reader can never
come to grips with them. Pynchon seems to put a lot of
effort into creating a negative space towards which
and into which the reader gropes. Seems to me he
paints these fanatics with a rather loving brush,
finally, and that suggests to me they aren't to be
despised.
