ATD: first edition binding variants WAS Re: Red-spined AtD?

Hmm, I suppose the two different bindings correspond quite nicely to the
theme of double refraction, and the dustjacket itself seems to indicate that
there are different versions of 'Against the Day', but if it was intended
all along, it still seems like a cheap publishing trick to me, one I would
expect from a publisher of Superman comics, but not from Pynchon's
publisher. A poor schmuck like me simply can't live without both versions of
the binding, and Penguin Press must count on that.
OK, here's a paranoid thought for the day: What if the doubling/refraction
hinted at by the dustjacket and the two bindings also extend to the text
itself?! What if there is not one, but two texts, differing ever so
slightly, with certain important phrases being replaced by others?! Not
"They fly toward grace", for instance, but "They fly toward hell" o-or:
"They fly toward Sweden"!!?? Yaaaaghh!
Doug, your task for today is to compare the two versions of AtD and make a
list of all the subtle, but important, differences! Report back in three
hours.
