Been re-reading V. recently. It is still difficult to believe that it was
written by a guy in his twenties. What a book! The most puzzling, at least
for me, remains Mondaugen's story. Reality and surreal visions are
interwoven to such an extent that even upon a second reading it's difficult
to make sense of this narrative. I rifled through the V. group read and
could not find any discussion about the identity of the narrator of the
'hallucinatory' 1904 flashback referred to as Firelily's rider. Is he and
Foppl one and the same person? Or maybe some metaphyical stuff is at work?
