I can't say from experience with brand new releases,
but all the other Pynchon novels have been searchable
on amazon.com.  If nothing else, some older titles and
a few hold-out publishers aside, these days one can
usually at least read the first few/several pages of
most anything there.  Either/or has been true of
anything from Penguin I've gone looking for, at any
rate.  Though that intro to  1984 still isn't online
there (Plume is, these days, a Penguin imprint, I
believe, so ...) ...
