And this sort of thing certainly isn't beyond Pynchon.  He wrote the Lotion 
liner notes because his banker (of all people) had a son who was in the band 
and P did it as a personal favor.  Plus, rumor has it he liked the band. 
"Knowing" someone and there being "some kind of connection" is part of the 
Pynchon MO at times.  Simple enough.

By the way, I was one of the people you mailed the PJ article to.  I had a 
student at the time whose uncle was/is living in Japan, and he translated it 
for me, which I then posted to the List in maybe 2003 or 04.
