I was going to say flat out that this was apochyphal, as I've never heard it 
and it would be oft-told, if true.  But, to be sure, I just ploughed through 
Joseph Blotner's 2-volume life of Faulkner and there's no mention.

Faulkner did, however, greatly esteem Joyce.  (Big surprise.)
