I'd say that Prince's great skill is as an arranger.
He's a solid guitarist & skilled on various other
instruments, but what really makes his best work stand
out is the arrangements. He's responsible for one of
the best horn lines in funk ("Rock Hard in a Funky
Place," from the Black Album. It's a horn line that
Sun Ra would be proud of), and generally moved funk
music beyond the Larry Graham school of bass dominated
music. As a matter of fact, many of his songs don't
even have bass at all. Larry Graham repaid the
compliment by converting Prince to the Jehovah's
Witnesses, so I guess they're even.
On the down side, he's done a lot of ridiculously
stupid stuff, like changing his name to that
unpronounceable symbol (and then back again), and
re-recording '1999' as a fuck you to Warner Brothers.
