What France is lacking

"What the contemporary France is lacking , when all is said and done, is a
Great Mysterious Writer. Somebody as phantom-like as J.D. Salinger or Thomas
Pynchon, but also French-speaking. An author about whom nothing would be
known besides several photos, very old, and some books, very considerable.
....
It was Pynchon himself who gave that information last summer on the site of
the American bookshop Amazon. A little as though Mahomet had climbed on top
of a minaret to announce a new version of the Koran."

The author of this article says that Philippe Sollers and Jean d'Ormesson
will never reach that 'status' as they have been too public. As for Julien
Gracq, although he is more apt for this position, he, apparently, has no
wish to compete for it, being resistant to viral marketing and having the
flaw of answering the phone.
