I didn't, although I've heard a few people make
similar comments.

After a few pages, it was Pynchon, doing something
different.

The Book Description and excerpt from Against the Day
that have been published, both at Amazon I think, may
give you some insight about the novel.

For me, the notion that Pynchon has "jumped the shark"
is ludicrous, his literary reputation continues to
grow, his new novel is eagerly awaited. Not
inconceivable that he might somehow "jump the shark"
with Against the Day, but I don't expect it, instead I
expect it to crown a long publishing career and send
people spinning back through all the novels and
stories to reconsider what he's been up to, in light
of the new novel.
