If the review generates interest in the book and
perhaps brings some new readers to Pynchon, what's the
harm? If a review is totally positive, people might
tend to be skeptical, maybe it's a good thing for
these reviewers to take a pot shot or two.
Otherwise, people take these newspaper and magazine
book reviews way too seriously, in my humble opinion,
when they're not ignoring them totally, that is. Most
are written by journalists just doing a job on
deadline, looking for a way to get their copy past
their editors with minimum hassle, I imagine.

Hard to accept that people might be excited about a
Pynchon novel that's not Gravity's Rainbow, eh?
That's the kind of bitterness that will eat a man
alive, my friend. Cuidado.
However Against the Day has turned out -- and early
reports are that it is a fine book with the ability to
fascinate and please die-hard Pynchon readers -- I
have to admire Pynchon for pursuing his art with the
integrity that he has shown during a long and
distinguished career. At this point, I'm wishing him
well, and will leave other sentiments to, well,
others.
