AtD SPOILER p. 80

I read THE HAUNTING OF L. when it came out -- a while ago. Howard
Norman is a friend of mine here in DC, where he lives during the
school year.

As I just finished the Merle Rideout photography section, I can
certainly say that there is a general similarity in the way ATD and
L. treat the magic of photography. Though Howard's book doesn't have
much in common with ATD, his novel does combine photography, romantic
betrayal and a kind of mysticism. L. is based around an actual book
that Howard discovered on the topic of Spirit Photography, and the
novel quotes from that real book at length. Really all quite wonderful.

For the record, research will reveal that Howard Norman's agent is,
in fact, Melanie Jackson. Those who wonder if Pynchon read THE
HAUNTING OF L. or whether Howard and Tom have, in fact, exchanged
information and ideas about the science and psuedo-science of
photography from a century ago, they just might be asking valid
questions.
