I'm at about 640 right now, but it was page 555 that was the only one so
far that made me cry.
There are these points in the book where that story slips away to only
historical example and I feel like Pynchon is speeking to US about the
world WE live in.
We have been like the Chums of Chance, following our Masters blindly while
we are caught up in the wonder of science, media, illusion. I was on the
city bus when I read page 555 and I looked around to the tierd people with
i-pods in their ears, and dead looks on their faces and I realized that we
are in the same situation. We are ruled by caipitals, controlled by
corporations that are forcing us to EAT ONE ANOTHER ALIVE (like sleddogs
or Anasazi) they are leading us, to fulfill their greed, into battles yet
to be that will make Flanders look like nothing.
This is why I don't think that the stories about Webb are about terrorist
suicide bombers. The worlds of Rev. Moss tell us that this is a matter of
STOPPING this THING from happening. These people want us DEAD and want our
LIFE ENERGY.
I think Pynchon is warning us against the next World War and DEMANDING
that we stop it before it starts.
y'r ob'd'nt s'rv'nt,
jordan
