I've probably absorbed a fair amount of it by virtue of being brought up in "Western civilization," and having a basic grounding in the history of Christianity: the Crusades, Inquisition, Reformation, etc. My gut feeling is that the original is probably considerably inferior to most of the great works of literature that allude to it. And also, fuck it, I'm closed-minded where religion is concerned.
