That passage, and the sad optimism of human
self-deception it implies, reminds me of the poem by
Louis Aragon:
"Rien n'est jamais acquis a l'homme [...]
et quand il croit ouvrir ses bras
son ombre est celle d'une croix"
I've got it copied out in a notebook somewhere, but I
don't have the source or reference.
