It probably didn't work against this title's chances.
I suspect the phrase has some special significance for
Pynchon, and that he has had it in mind as a book
title for some time - otherwise I don't see the
publisher going forward with the same title as
another novel. If he didn't have some special
attachment to the phrase, I expect he would have
ditched it and not left himself open to the charge of
picking a title already in use for a relatively recent
novel.
Also, picking up on a point Paul made - yes, I expect
to see Blavatsky and more of that turn of the century
Occult Revival crew, and I can hardly wait to see what
he does with it in the new book.
