VATICAN  TO VIEW 'NAZI' BISHOP FILE

THE Vatican is to release archives showing if  a senior bishop helped
Nazis escape justice.

Monsignor Alois Hudal  gained the nickname Black Bishop for his pro-
Hitler views. He even had a  golden Nazi Party membership badge.

He has long been suspected of  providing passports and other help for
Nazis trying to flee as the allies  tracked down war criminals after the
Second World  War.

They  included Adolf Eichmann, who was eventually found in Argentina and
hanged for  his part in the extermination of millions of Jews.

Vatican official  Monsignor Walter Brandmueller admitted Hudal's Nazi
sympathies.

But he  added yesterday: "At the moment we don't know whether the archive
will show  Monsignor Hudal to be a relevant character or not.

"We'll only know when  all the papers have been analysed. And there are a
lot of  them."

Austrian Hudal, who died in 1963, had been head of a seminary in  Rome
for training German priests.
