British female writers

There's always Henry Miller's pal Anais Nin. (assume we're no longer  
considering only living British females)

How about  Patricia Highsmith?. Known mostly as a crime writer. She  
certainly wrote about sexual minorities and there were some pretty  
Sadistic personalities represented.
