Steampunk for Pynchon readers

Fellows, I again rely on your formidable knowledge and ask for your advice. 
The thing is that I am abslotely illiterate in terms of the genre which is 
called "steampunk". As several folks indicated in the net that it might be 
relevant to AtD, I would love to learn more about this phenomenon. What, in 
your opinion, are the best literary samples of steampunk? I realise there 
should be plenty of these novels by now, and therefore I would like to rely 
on the opinion of Pynchon readers. Thanks in advance!
