I don't know that I said this, but I do tend to be
skeptical of the books that benefit from the sort of
marketing push you find behind some of the newer
authors, the bandwagon effect, promoting the new
author as a celebrity. Considerable effort and money
(in some cases) is being spent to whip up interest and
drive sales of some mediocre books.

Getting recommendations from friends whose taste I
know and who know my taste - that's how I've
discovered a lot of the books I've really enjoyed. A
variation on that: choosing to read books mentioned
or discussed by an author whose work I like. I've
spent many a happy hour since 1973 not only reading
Pynchon's books but also reading books that I've
learned about from Pynchon's books, or books about
topics encountered in Pynchon's work. Likewise,
several other authors have led me on to yet other
books I've enjoyed.
