I have heard that, too, that some publishers don't
want something if it's been on the Web. I think others
may act differently.
Not to minimize the difficulties, not at all, not for
a reader looking for something great and new, or
fromthe perspecitve of the struggling author trying to
find an audience. Compared to 1973, however, just to
be arbitrary, new authors seem to have some
advantages, because of the Web and digitial
technologies, now than before; one disadvantage may be
that it's still pretty easy to get lost in the crowd.
Most of these book self-publishing tools will be used,
I expect, the way most people use blogs - a way to
share and communicate with friends and family. I
expect most people will use them to put together
scrapbooks, photo albums, memoirs, stuff they never
expect to try to sell or show to anybody else.
I don't expect that willt stop some enterprising young
author from using something like Lulu.com to get a
book out there and make something happen.
