My Dad, who lived in Alaska for a while in the '50s, used the expression "Colder than a well-digger's boot in the Yukon" whenever he had to describe the extreme.

Steve--that's pretty cold.  Tom Waits uses it somewhere on The Heart of Saturday Night.
