Well, if you don't like the politics of Houellbecq, you won't like Dantec.
He is the son of communists and used to write cyberpunk roman noir. He then
got some more political ambitions, moved to Montreal, were he started
writing essays about how he disliked the new soviet union that was becoming
the european union. After september 11, he turned catholic and started
waging war against islamofascism in order to defend european civilisation -
the source of everyg good things in the world.
His novels have become longer and more confused. He sometimes has a spark of
genius that enable him to write some beautiful paragraphs, but for most of
the pages it's just dull, uninspired prose, when it's not plain ridiculous.
I think he was translated and published in the US by a publishing house that
made Deleuze available to the american public - and Dantec in his essays
talk at length of Deleuze, Debord, etc, but let's just say his
interpretation is a bit peculiar. His other favourite thinker is Joseph de
Maistre, he supports Bush and the war on terrorism, thinks we are right now
in the midst of the fourth world war. Much, much more right-wing than
Houellbecq.
